Agadir in Splendor
Agadir—a name derived from the Berber (Amazigh) language meaning “Collective Fortified Granary”—stands as a testament to resilience and renewal. With a population of 504,000 as recorded in the 2024 census, the city was almost entirely razed by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake on February 29, 1960, at 23:45, which demolished 90% of its structures. In the wake of this calamity, His Majesty King Mohamed V proclaimed, “If fate has decreed the destruction of Agadir, then its reconstruction shall rest on our faith and determination.” Rising from the ruins, Agadir has reinvented itself as a modern, forward-looking metropolis that harmoniously blends Western influences with traditional Moroccan charm. Today, it shines as the Kingdom’s premier seaside resort and a beacon of progress.
